Weather-related myths surrounding electric vehicles

Electric vehicles are gaining popularity in the automotive industry, and they will soon have a market share in this section. These vehicles have proved to be an unbiased competitor for conventional petrol cars. 

All the same, peculiar myths surround their proficiency, especially concerning their non-susceptibility to adverse weather conditions. With the onset of the rainy season, the unparalleled question is whether these EVs thrive in such weather. 

One of the myths is that electric vehicles are susceptible to damp conditions. The reality is that electric cars have a numbering system called Ingress Protection to indicate their immunity against environmental elements like dust and water. Generally, electric vehicles have an IP rating between IP65 and IP67. The higher the value, the safer higher the nonsusceptibility rate for the car against these variables.

 Usually, complex systems like submarines have a higher IP value. The IP67 rating is indicative of the concept that the vehicle can be immersed in one meter of water for about half an hour without percolation. Therefore, the car can navigate through waterlogged situations without damage. 

Plunging the electric car into a pool of water may not result in a breakdown of any kind. This concept is possible because of the layers of the protective mechanism engulfing the battery and thereby hindering the disparity of power. Another useful mechanism is the battery’s ability to detach from the car in such conditions electrically. 

The second myth is that electric vehicles are vulnerable to malfunction when struck with lightning. Thunderstorms are a high possibility, especially when it is heavily raining. Many people fear that EVs may be affected by lightning strikes.

Nonetheless, it would be safer for people to be inside the car since the vehicle’s metallic surface would be channeled down to the ground via electromagnetic effect. A report indicates that this mechanism in electric vehicles surpasses their ICE counterparts. EVs are safer from lightning bolts than ICE vehicles. 

The other myth concerning Electric vehicles is that it is hazardous to recharge them while it is raining. People are skeptical about restoring electric cars in the rain for fear of electrocution. Incidentally, EV chargers are insulated to safeguard the vehicle and the car owner from electric shock. The insulation or waterproofing of electrical joiners is one of the measures stipulated to protect the people. 

Last but not least, there is a myth that the support components reduce the mileage of electric vehicles. Air conditioners, windscreen wipers, lights, and other parts consume a negligible amount of power that cannot substantially reduce the car’s mileage range. The EV manufacturers explain that they have considered the energy consumed by these cars before outlining its mileage range.
