Siemens Energy is collaborating with a Norway thermal energy company called EnergyNest to transition the industrial sector to renewable energy, which is emission-free.
EnergyNest is a creator of Thermal Batteries whereby a form of concrete they call Heatcrete heats up by a hot heat transfer fluid (HTF) going through steel pipes in the system. The company idealizes that the storage of energy in these thermal batteries results in minimal heat loss. It is also explicable that when the battery is in use, heat leaves the cell on top while the low-temperature HTF channels in through the bottom of the system.
The thermal batteries have a modular design while they are inside the 20ft units. These modules are portable with much ease, and the pipe system can be remade and tried before a subsequent release of the system to the project sites. The component materials of the batteries are available in vast quantities, reusable, and also ecofriendly. EnergyNest says that this venture is cost-effective and easily feasible since there is minimal heat loss with the energy available for use ranging from MWh to GWh.
This partnership comes after Siemens having dealt with EnergyNest before in a 1MWh project in Abu Dhabi. This project was to substantiate energy technology before a significant rollout of other projects. This project started before the splitting of Siemens company from Siemens Gas and Power to form one of the current firms called Siemens Energy.
EnergyNest told Energy-Storage.news that this agreement gears towards creating thermal energy storage systems for their industrial customers within one year.
EnergyNest confirms that some of the results of this partnership are two commercial systems for this technology at Senftenbacher’s Austrian brick-making factory. This project has a potential of the 6-8MWh worth of power. Another project is currently in the Netherlands, where the country hopes to transition from natural gas to renewable energy courtesy of the thermal batteries.
Energy-Storage.news also explains a similar contract between a thermal energy storage designer Azelio and CITRUS, which is known for designing industrial equipment. This agreement will catapult the spread of this technology, adding on the solar PV to customers in North and Central America.
Finally, another thermal storage startup called Lumenion is conducting similar tryouts with Vattenfall. The Chief executive of Lumenion, Alexander Voigt, says that his firm hopes to design an energy storage system that stores renewables at the cheapest cost. With all these projects and partnerships in place, the energy sector is confident of transitioning to emission-free systems.
